  • So who is Wilhelmine Knopp Keller (Kellen) Bergmann? Who are her parents? Where exactly in Prussia was she born? When did she arrive in Texas? Since Gustav said his only heir is Wilhelmine does that mean the daughters are hers? Were her children really born in Boerne? Who was their father? What happened to him? What is her relationship to Dietrich? What happened to her son Charles? Did he also use the Bergmann name? Is her maiden name really Knopp? Is she related to the Knopp family from Fredericksburg? Why didn’t she leave a few more bread crumbs?

Bull’s Head Saloon

Gustav Bergmann’s Saloon Ad

In the 1883-1884, Gustav Bergmann placed an advertisement for his saloon at 259 Market Street in the San Antonio City Directory. I looked in several other San Antonio directories and this was the only advertisement for his establishment I found. The bull certainly looks happy and thirsty.

In 1877-1878 city directory, under Saloons the location of the saloon was the “sw corner of Commerce and Presa”. In 1886-1887 his saloon is not listed, but in 1888-1889 the address for the saloon was 43 Alamo Street.

Gustav is the son of Joseph Bergmann.

Bexar County Deed Records

A while back I was complaining about how I needed to go to the Bexar County Court House to look at deed records. My other option was I could order them on microfilm which I wasn’t too excited about. Mary, who belongs to the Local Family and History Archives at the Patrick Heath Public Library, said, “You don’t need to do either option, just go to this website https://gov.propertyinfo.com/tx-bexar/ and register. It’s free and you can search the Bexar County Deed Records from your home computer.” Wow! I had no idea! Since Kendall County was once part of Bexar County I was able to find land information for Joseph Bergmann, Gustav Bergmann, and Conrad Adam. It’s so easy and you can download and print the documents for your files. I’m ready for all counties to jump on the band wagon and digitize! Thank you Mary for this fabulous tip.

Gustav Bergmann Family

I can’t believe it! It’s the second week of October. Even though friends were visitng, I thought I would be able to squeeze in a post or two last week. But as you can tell, that didn’t happen. On Monday morning, October 3, my son called. He was in the hospital. It seems his appendix didn’t like him anymore and wanted to leave and it did just that! I am thankful he didn’t try to “tough it out” thinking the pain would go away. As a result, the week quickly slipped by.

St. John's Lutheran Church San Antonio, Texas

Great news! I have new information about Wilhelmina Bergmann, wife of Gustav Bergmann and daughter-in-law of Joseph Bergmann. I received an email from Maria Pfeiffer, archivist at St. John’s Lutheran Church in San Antonio. She checked their burial files and found that Wilhelmina’s maiden name was Knopp and not Finger as was stated on Mina Bergmann Federolf’s death certificate. Mina was her second oldest daughter. Wilhelmina’s birth and death dates were also listed! Yea!! She was born 2 April 1832 and died 5 May 1904. Her tombstone had 1905 as her death date and no other dates.

The Bergmann families were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church which is located on Nueva Street in downtown San Antonio. All three daughters married there.

Tombstone Tuesday: Bergmann

Yesterday, my friend Donna and I went on a genealogy field trip. We visited five cemeteries and since it was the end of September we thought the 100 degree weather was over, but not so. Nevertheless, I found everyone I’d thought I would find including, someone I hoped I would find!

Our first stop was the Old St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery sometimes called the Old German Lutheran Cemetery. It is located East of downtown San Antonio near several other cemeteries.Gustav Bergmann, Joseph and Theresia Bergmann’s oldest son, was buried there according to the St. John’s Lutheran archive records.  Of course, there always is a chance that there isn’t a tombstone, but I was not disappointed. A beautiful gray granite stone with curbing around the plot.

Gustav and Wilhelmina Bergmann’s Tombstones

Next we went to City Cemetery #1 to locate Johanna Bergmann Toepperwein’s tombstone. Johanna is the youngest daughter of Joseph and Theresia Bergmann.

Johanna Bergmann Toepperwein’s Tombstone

We visited the Hermann Sons’ Cemetery which is located in the same area as the Old Saint John’s Lutheran Cemetery and City Cemetery #1. We found Gustav’s oldest daughter, Rosa,  and some of his grandchildren plus Ida his youngest daughter. I didn’t know where she was buried and was excited to find her and her husband!

Rosa Bergmann Goerges Plot at Hermann Sons’ Cemetery

Ida Bergmann Groos and her husband Fred. “Fritz” Groos. The lucky find!! Woo hoo!!

Ida was born in 1873 and died in 1901.

Ida Bergmann Groos’ Tombstone

Fritz belonged to the Woodman of the World. They always have the most interesting tombstones.

He was born in 1857 and died in 1906.

It’s True!!

I like to watch the TV show Who Do You Think You Are? One of the advertisers for the show is Ancestry.com.  In the commercial, they say click on the “leaf for hints”. I was skeptical, what are the odds that I would actually connect with someone and we would swap information. I signed up for a three month trial. Well, let me tell you right now IT’S TRUE! I have been looking for information about the Joseph Bergmann family. According the Gunner Froebel family tree, there was another son named Gustav born about 1840.  I added him to the family tree and a green leaf appeared. I clicked on the leaf and I found a picture of him and his wife! I learned he was a saloon keeper and had three daughters!  Can you believe it?? Plus I contacted the person who submitted the information. Christy lives in California and if I figured it out correctly; Joseph is also her 3rd great grandfather! When my three month trial is up, I will be signing on.  I’m pumped!!

Gustav Bergmann

Gustav was a saloon keeper on the Corner of Commerce and Presa in downtown San Antonio.

In 1891, the family residence was 256 Garden Street. The street name was later changed to Navarro.

He died about 1893.

Wilhemina Knopp Bergmann

Wilhemina and Gustav had three daughters.

Ida born 1873

Rosa born 1865

Wilhemina born 1869

Christy generously shared the pictures and information with me. Thank you!
